THE EDGE BAND : Nepalese Classic Band

The Edge Band is a Nepalese Classic Band , formed in 1998 in Pokhara, The Edge came into the Nepali Rock scene with a self titled debut in 2000. The video of the song “mero aasu” from the debut album, witnessed a country wide popularity surge within a week of its official release. This success gave the band a much needed break into the mainstream music industry in Nepal. The album included other hits like jeewan mero, pagal nabhana, and numberous jams and rehearsals, Jeewan connected with three talented seasoned musicians in Pokhara.

Biography of Sugam Pokhrel : Singer & RJ

Sugam Pokharel

Sugam Pokhrel (born 20 September, 1979 in Mangalbaaray, Morang) is one of the most renowned singers of Nepali Music Industry. He is also a popular RJ. He is well known as both singer and composer. He is the youngest child of two brothers and two sisters. He was a very shy kid in his child days. He used to listen the songs of Sanjay Shrestha, Deep shrestha and Harish Mathema which unknowingly influenced him towards his destiny.

Kumar Kanchha passes away!

Kumar Kanchha, a legendary Nepalese singer and a musician who contributed a lot in Nepali Music Industry, has passed today at the age of 53 at an Indian Hospital in India. He had been suffering from Spinal Chord and other various medical difficulties back to October, then SangeetSansar.com wrote an article requesting for his help.

He has sang more than 100 songs in Nepali Movies and few in Hindi as well. Aamaile bhandin dharako paani, Batasale Udai Lagyo, Zindagi ko ke chha ra bhara, Ghintag ma Ghintag are still fresh in our musical minds.

Amber Gurung “Father of Nepali Modern Music”

Amber Gurung was born on February 26, 1938. His father Ujir Singh Gurung,  born in Tanahun district of  Nepal, was a soldier in the British Indian Army and later joined the British Indian police force in Darjeeling, India, where Amber was born and raised along with his two siblings, an older sister and a younger brother. Amber Gurung and his wife Bina have four children, Kishor, Raju, Alka and Sharad and five grand-children.
Amber Gurung was passionate about music from his early childhood. His father never approved of this interest but his mother  encouraged him. He started composing and singing during his schooldays, which won him recognition and many music awards. He is a self taught musician who learned both western and eastern classical music entirely on his own. He taught himself to play violin, piano, guitar, mandolin, tabla and several other instruments. 
In the 1950s Amber Gurung started a music institute, The Art Academy of Music, in Darjeeling, where famous musicians and singers such as Aruna Lama, Sharan Pradhan, Gopal Yonzon, Peter Karthak,  Indra Gajmer, and Ranjit Gajmer to name a few, learned under his guidance. His first recorded song ‘Nau Lakhe Tara’  made waves throughout the Nepali world, both in Nepal and India. This song about the suffering of the Nepali diaspora is considered a masterpiece of both lyrics (by Agam Singh Giri) and musical composition. Many other songs recorded in the 1960s on 78 speed vinyl records helped make him one of the main architects of modern Nepali music.

Amber Gurung joined the Folk Entertainment Unit, Government of West Bengal, Darjeeling as Music Chief, from 1962-1965. He became disillusioned with the bureaucracy  and resigned from the post in 1965, but continued to write music and do stage shows both in Nepal and India. In 1967 he joined the prestigious Dr. Graham Homes School  as a Music Teacher. In 1968 he was invited by then King Mahendra of Nepal to return permanently to Nepal to establish and chair the music department of the newly founded Nepal Academy of Arts. He served as Music Director for nearly 30 years.

We always talk about Nepali Music and use to say that Nepali Music has been lacking behind these days.Nepali Music is not commercialized as compared to English and Indian Music. But we use to hear and see in newspaper that there is a huge demand of Nepali Music in International Market.There are many reasons behind Nepali Music being not able to get proper marketing and promotion. One of the main reason for this is due to piracy.So kill piracy and give more love and support to Nepali Music which becomes a milestone to the Nepalese Artists to create better music.

But musicians go through all these pains because they love and believe in music and they believe in fair and just financial reward return for hard work of producing beauty of music they offer to the world. Don't you agree that musicians should be paid for their work?

When people illegally post or download free MP3 files on Internet of the music that musician made so many sacrifices to create - it is the sign of ULTIMATE DISRESPECT! This means literally taking the bread off the musician's table and spitting in their face!


The music business works like this... (if you don't know).
Musicians who make the music give the album to the company under certain conditions. Then company sells it through its distribution channels and shares the percentage of return income with the musician. Stores and distributors also get their cut for the retail sale service to you - the customer. So the bottom line percentage per a CD/Cassette that goes back to the musician is quite small in the end. Also don't forget that musician invested money in studio time so this has to be covered before musician makes any real profit money!!!

To make a living from music this way a lot of CDs/Cassettes have to be sold. That CD/Cassette money also gets re-invested in touring, new albums, promotion, etc.Everybody in the chain of music industry is living from this system of sale... magazines, concert promoters, labels, music stores. Every single CD/Cassette sold counts and especially today for artists like myself who do not have a big budget at their disposal to promote themselves in mainstream media, TV, Magazines, etc (yes, all that actually has to be paid for and costs quite a lot).

I know,... CDs in stores cost money (Rs. 250 a piece?), the world is in economic crises and it's easier to get a free download so that you can put that money into buying your pants and momos, right? Hey, you can make a cool free collection of thousands of albums with no money invested at all! Woohhhoooo, viva la internet!! How cool is this!!!??? Well,... NOT COOL AT ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nabin K Bhattarai "The King of Pop"

Nabin K Bhattarai (born March 14, 1974, in Kathmandu, Nepal) is the most prominent and popular singer in Nepali Music Industry. He is well known as both singer and composer. According to him he was naughty boy in his childhood days so he was send to Budanilakantha School as a boarder.

His hobbies includes paintings, sports, listening music and net surfing. His favorite game is football. After intermediate level, he with his some friends established a band named “The steels wheel”. Nabin is the rhythm guitarist in the band and band performed some concerts in the valley. All the band members except Nabin flew abroad .However the band acted as the catalyst in his musical career. As per his personal interest, he recorded his first song 'Aakhama Timilai' which was appreciated by the Nepali music Lovers and in no time he was successful singer.

Nabin achieved a lot in music during a short period of time. His first ever award was Sajjan Smriti which was also followed by Chinnalata award. At that time he became a youngest artist to get Chinnalata award. He has twice won the Sajha Smriti Award for Best Male Vocalist, first for Preetka Geet (Raharai Raharama) and then for Aankha ma Timilai. He also won Award of the Year for Raharai Raharama. He further won the Shikhar Hits FM Music Award 2054 as the Best Male Vocal for Saanja Pakha. His album 'Avash' is arguably one of the most popular albums of all time in Nepal's modern music industry. His album Samjhana became the second highest selling album of the year at that time.He has won several Hits FM Awards. That’s why he is known as "The king of pop" in Nepali Music. He is the one who commercialized the Nepali Music. Most of his earlier songs have a soft touch to them, depicting the loneliness of a young lover. His musical journey has been an inspiration to the Nepali music lovers.

Jhalak Man Gandarbha “The most significant Nepali Folk Singer”

Jhalak Man Gandarbha (1935 - November 23, 2003) is one of the most significant Nepali folk singer. He is popular for Gaine Geet or Gandarbha Sangeet, a popular type of folk song sung only by the Gaine or Gandarbha ethnic group of Nepal. He is the first Gaine singer to record Gaine song and is respected for bringing voice of native and ordinary people into the mass media.

Jhalak Man Gandarbha started singing for a livelihood in villages of Nepal from the age of nine. He learned to sing, dance, and play music early on from his father. He started his career as a street singer to earn his living. With the help of Dharmaraj Thapa, he got a place in Radio Nepal station in 1965. Aamale Sodhlin Ni… is by far his most popular song, which intones the death of a Nepali soldier on a foreign battle ground. He has also performed in various countries, including Germany, Belgium, Yugoslavia, France, and India.

Jhalak Man composed Karkhas of some twenty Nepali heroes who have shown their bravery during the Second World War. Gaje Ghale, honored with Victoria Cross after the Second World War, is one of them. He appreciates the significant efforts made by Kumar Basnet, Ram Thapa, Sambhu Rai, Jayananda Lama, Premraja Mahat, Bam Bahadur Rai, Chandra Shah, Mira Rana, Gyanu Rana, Dharmaraj Thapa, and Lochan Bhattarai to preserve the importance of folk songs.

Late Arun Thapa - "A Legend Of Nepali Music"

Arun Thapa (1954-1999) was a popular singer of Nepal. He is one of the greatest music icons of Nepal. Arun Thapa was born in Calcutta, India in Jan 1954. His father was Ganju Thapa Magar. He started his singing career 39 years ago,when he first sang his song in Radio Nepal in 1971.

He had launched two music albums Arun and The best of Arun Thapa. Both of the albums were very popular among the Nepalese music listeners. His songs like Ritu haruma timi hariyali basanta hau.., bhulu bhulu lagyo malai... have touched the heart of millions Nepali music lovers.

According to the survey done by BBC, his song “Ritu hauram timi” ranked seventh spot in the world greatest music. Most of his songs are of tragic flavor. Some of his most popular songs are” Ritu haruma timi.., Jati maya laye pani…, Bhulu bhulu lagyo malai…, Chot k ho betha k ho….

1974 AD Nepalese Rock Band

1974 AD are Nepalese rock band, formed in Kathmandu, Nepal in the early 1994s. They experiment with various genre of music including Nepali folk, ragas, rock, funk, blues and jazz as well. 1974 AD are amongst the most successful recording artists in Nepal. Most of their albums are ranked among the top-ten best-selling albums according to the Hits FM of Nepal. This band is also partially affiliated with the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory. They are also known as "The Beatles of Nepal".There concert named 'Rock Yatra ' in 2000 AD was witnessed by more than 60,000 people. This is a record concert in Nepal.

Songs and albums produced by 1974AD are usually in the "Nepali" language. Lyrics include themes of patriotism, Nepali virtues, unity, love and nationalism.Theres a lot of veriety in the music of 1974 AD. 1974 AD has performed more than 30 charity concerts and donated N Rs 2,35,000/- for flood victims in 2002 and 50,000/- for the labor fund, Doha 2004. Still 1974 AD is very active in charity performance since its beginning days, it has performed more than 40 charity concert in Nepal till date.

Nowadays they are in London for their musical tour.

Gopal Yonjan

Gopal Yonjan is a one of the most prominent music composer, director, lyricist, singer and music arranger in the history of nepali music.

In a brief introduction of Gopal Yonjan on an album cover, Music Nepal, the largest music company in Nepal, writes:
"Gopal Yonjan is a music composer, director, lyricist, singer and music arranger, who left us all in May 1997. In his search for excellence, Gopal dedicated his entire life in creating Nepali Music. Though his compositions he illustrates the diversity and beauty of Nepali music with the sensitivity and clarity of a fine painter who touched every stroke with an in-depth understanding of his subject. Narayan Gopal

Narayan Gopal is by far the most prominent and popular singer in nepali music history. He is well known as a singer but was also an accomplished composer. His voice range allowed him to sing songs of every genre of Nepali music. His songs are often richly orchestrated with the sitar, harmonium and flute.

Some of his most popular songs include "Euta Manche Ko Maya le Kati)", "Jhareko Paat Jhai", "Yo Samjhine Man Cha" , "Saawan ko jhari bani", "Manche ko Maya". Narayan Gopal has been given with title "Swar Samrat" (literally, Emperor of Voice) which affirms his position as the supreme genius of Nepali music.
