A Tribute to Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota

Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota’s famous verses were put to music and the poet was given a fitting tribute in the latest edition of the Paleti series at nepa~laya’s r sala on Friday.

Devkota, well known for his works like Muna Madan, Sulochana, Prithivi Raj Chauhan and Prometheus, is probably Nepal’s most famous litterateur ever. The Lunatic, the translated version of his poem Pagal, is praised outside Nepal as well. He is supposed to have introduced the popular Nepali folk meter in Muna Madan, which remains one of the classics of Nepali literature.

The evening started with the famous composition Kun Mandir Ma Janchau Yatri, regarded as one of the landmarks of Nepali music. The music by Narayan Gopal, Gopal Yonjan, Ashok Rai, Amber Gurung, Chandraraj Sharma, and Govinda Bahadur Gurung took the audience to a different world of poetic verse.

Bhakta Raj Acharya's musical legacy, was carried on by his sons Satya and Swaroop. The brothers grew up listening to their father, singing from an early age. Their first ever performance on stage was at a benefit concert for their father in 1993, in which they performed his songs. But their professional career started only five years later in 1998. AFK paints Valley with colourful tunes

No celebration in any part of the world or culture is complete without music. And once a year comes the International Music Day which celebrates music and the integral part it plays in a community. June 21 is marked as the International Music Day and every year Alliance Francaise Kathmandu (AFK) makes sure it is marked with much fanfare. This year too was no different with AFK organising various programmes around the Valley.

The closing of the week-long celebration took place at Rastriya Nach Ghar on June 27, where French Jazz band Sam Smala performed. The concert was opened by 7th Gravity, the winner of AFK Music Contest on June 23. Watching them perform it was clear why they beat the six bands that participated in the competition. Their style was a fusion between jazz and rock with a hint of Latino Salsa to it making it a wonderful experience altogether. They played three instrumental pieces, out of which one was from their upcoming album.

Tara Devi - “ A Legend of Nepali Music”

Tara Devi was a Nepali singer. She was known as the "nightingale of Nepal" having recorded over 4,000 songs during her lifetime. Much of her music revolved around the themes of patriotism and love. Tara Devi was born to Krishna Bahadur and Radha Devi on January 15, 1946 at Indra Chowk, Kathmandu. She got married to pilot Shiva Bahadur Shrestha in 1966. Later, she gave birth to two sons -- Sashi and Ravi and a daughter Charu. Since her early says, she started showing her talent in singing. When she was five years old she went to Radio Nepal with the veteran artist Bhairav Bahadur Thapa. When she was singing, everyone who heard her were extremely impressed . Right from an early age, she was able to charm people's attention with her voice. During that period she sang many songs on baal program broadcasted regularly on Radio Nepal.

Since her early days, Tara Devi was appreciated by many. Together with her studies she carried on with her music. After the School Leaving Certificate, she did Bachelors in Music. During the initial days she used to earn Rs 5 for singing one song at Radio Nepal and as time passed she started earning Rs. 100 for each song she sang. With this progress, she was more than happy. As time passed, she was able to get recognition in the music circles as well as the general public. During that period she was also appointed as a Khardar at Radio Nepal. Gradually, she held the position of Nayab Subba and Upasachib and spent 30 years of her career there. It was then that she recorded numerous songs almost in every field such as patriotic numbers, bhajan, modern or even folk numbers. With all of this she was able to contribute her songs to the music loving fans of Nepal.

Tara Devi was in the music scene for more than 50 years and during this time she was able to establish herself as a true daughter of Nepal. She was decorated with ‘Suprashidda Gorkha Dakshin Bahu’ and 'Mahendra Ratna', Indra Rajya Laxmi award, Jagadumba award, Chinnalata award,'Maina' among many others for her contribution in the musical field. When Tara Devi was granted with an honor “Swor Samragi”, she had reached the height of popularity in Nepal as an artist and as a versatile singer. Her popular numbers includes - Ukali oraliharuma, Phulako thunga bagera gayo, Timilai hasera bidamatrai, Saguri bari ni hau, Shubhakama bhari etc. Throughout her singing career, Devi gave her melodious voice to more than 4,000 songs.

A NIGHT WITH DEEP SHRESTHA

The Dharan Sarokar Samaj organised an enchanting musical night entitled Deep Sanjh on Sunday at the National Academy in the Capital, featuring noted singer Deep Shrestha, who was glad throughout the programme to be able to sing for his home town. Basanta Thapa, renowned song writer, very beautifully said, “Let’s see if Deep’s voice can generate a few drops of water in Dharan.” The show was organised to tackle the present water crisis in Dharan. Dharan Sarokar Samaj was established recently to muster up people concerned with Dharan in any manner to work towards a more prosperous Dharan. The organisation believes that through efforts like these, they will be able to achieve the Dharan of their dreams: a popular tourist destination and a medical hub. Shrestha also sang a duet with his daughter. The informal environment was further lightened by Shrestha’s humour as well. Shrestha began with Ma Pathar ko Deuta Hoina, which set the mood for the evening. The show was embellished with his classics such as Ma ta Kuhiro Bhitra Chhu and Jhin Ma Unine Tyo Euta Kura. Shrestha described the experience as a ‘self-satisfying’ one as it enabled him to contribute to the town he grew up in. The singer had requested his listeners at the beginning of the show to sing with him if he needed help and towards the end the audience was singing with him mesmerised in melody. Shrestha also presented the song Sunideu Sano Chada ko Katha which was his first venture as a lyricist. Thapa, who is also Shrestha’s childhood friend, said Shrestha had always been a self-learner and praised his ability to learn anything by simply observing it. He even compared Shrestha with melody king Narayan Gopal suggesting he is near to achieving the same stature. Shrestha has definitely made his mark in the minds of Nepali music lovers and continues to do so.

Nabin K Bhattarai "The King of Pop"

Nabin K Bhattarai (born March 14, 1974, in Kathmandu, Nepal) is the most prominent and popular singer in Nepali Music Industry. He is well known as both singer and composer. According to him he was naughty boy in his childhood days so he was send to Budanilakantha School as a boarder.

His hobbies includes paintings, sports, listening music and net surfing. His favorite game is football. After intermediate level, he with his some friends established a band named “The steels wheel”. Nabin is the rhythm guitarist in the band and band performed some concerts in the valley. All the band members except Nabin flew abroad .However the band acted as the catalyst in his musical career. As per his personal interest, he recorded his first song 'Aakhama Timilai' which was appreciated by the Nepali music Lovers and in no time he was successful singer.

Nabin achieved a lot in music during a short period of time. His first ever award was Sajjan Smriti which was also followed by Chinnalata award. At that time he became a youngest artist to get Chinnalata award. He has twice won the Sajha Smriti Award for Best Male Vocalist, first for Preetka Geet (Raharai Raharama) and then for Aankha ma Timilai. He also won Award of the Year for Raharai Raharama. He further won the Shikhar Hits FM Music Award 2054 as the Best Male Vocal for Saanja Pakha. His album 'Avash' is arguably one of the most popular albums of all time in Nepal's modern music industry. His album Samjhana became the second highest selling album of the year at that time.He has won several Hits FM Awards. That’s why he is known as "The king of pop" in Nepali Music. He is the one who commercialized the Nepali Music. Most of his earlier songs have a soft touch to them, depicting the loneliness of a young lover. His musical journey has been an inspiration to the Nepali music lovers.

Jhalak Man Gandarbha (1935 - November 23, 2003) is one of the most significant Nepali folk singer. He is popular for Gaine Geet or Gandarbha Sangeet, a popular type of folk song sung only by the Gaine or Gandarbha ethnic group of Nepal. He is the first Gaine singer to record Gaine song and is respected for bringing voice of native and ordinary people into the mass media.

Jhalak Man Gandarbha started singing for a livelihood in villages of Nepal from the age of nine. He learned to sing, dance, and play music early on from his father. He started his career as a street singer to earn his living. With the help of Dharmaraj Thapa, he got a place in Radio Nepal station in 1965. Aamale Sodhlin Ni… is by far his most popular song, which intones the death of a Nepali soldier on a foreign battle ground. He has also performed in various countries, including Germany, Belgium, Yugoslavia, France, and India.

Jhalak Man composed Karkhas of some twenty Nepali heroes who have shown their bravery during the Second World War. Gaje Ghale, honored with Victoria Cross after the Second World War, is one of them. He appreciates the significant efforts made by Kumar Basnet, Ram Thapa, Sambhu Rai, Jayananda Lama, Premraja Mahat, Bam Bahadur Rai, Chandra Shah, Mira Rana, Gyanu Rana, Dharmaraj Thapa, and Lochan Bhattarai to preserve the importance of folk songs.

Late Arun Thapa - "A Legend Of Nepali Music"

Arun Thapa (1954-1999) was a popular singer of Nepal. He is one of the greatest music icons of Nepal. Arun Thapa was born in Calcutta, India in Jan 1954. His father was Ganju Thapa Magar. He started his singing career 39 years ago,when he first sang his song in Radio Nepal in 1971.

He had launched two music albums Arun and The best of Arun Thapa. Both of the albums were very popular among the Nepalese music listeners. His songs like Ritu haruma timi hariyali basanta hau.., bhulu bhulu lagyo malai... have touched the heart of millions Nepali music lovers.

According to the survey done by BBC, his song “Ritu hauram timi” ranked seventh spot in the world greatest music. Most of his songs are of tragic flavor. Some of his most popular songs are” Ritu haruma timi.., Jati maya laye pani…, Bhulu bhulu lagyo malai…, Chot k ho betha k ho….
