MLTR (Michael Learns To Rock), one of the world’s best Danish Band, is giving a concert in Kathmandu this November 19, 2011. After the  Grand success of Bryam Aams Live Concert in Nepal, now it’s the turn  of Danish pop rock boy band Michael Learns To Rock to entertain their Nepalese Fans.  “Take me to your heart” the song  by MLTR is all time favorites of many people. MLTR Live In Concert Nepal is organized by ODC Network and Engage Entertainment in 19th Nov 2011 i.e 3 Mangsir 2068, Saturday in Tudikhel, Kathmandu.

“The Ghazal King” - Jagjit Singh dies

Jagjit Singh,  most prominent Gazal singer, Composer and music director, Popularly known as “The Gazal King” (Gazal Samrat) in Hindi  Cinema, died Monday after a brain hemorrhage at the age of 70. He was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital on Sep 23rd after he suffered brain hemorrhage.

He was the first Indian composer and the first recording artist in the history of Indian music to use digital multi-track recording for album “Beyond Time” (1987). A Padma Bhusan award recipient, Jagjit Singh has sung from many popular Hindi Films. He had also sung in several languages, including Nepali, Urdu, Punjabi and Gujarati.

Music For Education “Raju Lama For U……”

Nepali First Media Production Ltd is going to organize a musical program for education at London. Music For Education “Raju Lama For U…”, an evening with Raju Lama Mongolian Heart Vol –5 live along with local bands Paper Edge and JPT Rockerz’s. The program is scheduled on 5th December, 2010.

Dish Nepal 12th Music Honors

One of the popular radio station of Nepal, “Radio Kantipur” Radio Rastra Ko celebrates its 12th anniversary with its traditional fashion at Rastriya Naach Ghar, Jamal. The event is all about music titled “Dish Nepal 12th Music Honors”. The theme of the event is fire defining fire as a symbol of purity. The music fair begins starting with an english song by Jindabad Band.

Prabhat Rimal, Station Manager of KFM started the program dedicating all of their credits to listeners, artists and advertisement agencies. Chairman Kailash Sirohiya put up his words afterthen. Along with FM’s services, he louds some of the plans of stations including broadcasting soon in USA, to honor music companies form this year and more importantly the station will also award a radio journalist selected throughout Nepal from upcoming year which will be of worth Rs 50,000. The speech was followed by R.K. Manandhar , Chairman of Dish Nepal which is the main sponsor of the event.

A Two Years Old Baby Drummer

What do you think you can do at the age of two. Can you imagine a two years old baby playing a drum. It is hard to believe but it is true that a two years baby named Utprem Jojiju from Pokhara plays a drum so nicely with great timing.

He cannot even understand what other say and speaks only mommy and baba but nowadays he has drum infront of him and a drum sticks on his hand. His father Binit Jojiju who is also a singer said that, “ They were surprised when they saw his son playing drum. Utprem is the first who play drum in song with timing at the very early age. when he searched in the internet he didn’t find anyone below four years who plays  a drum.”

Raju Lama Concert for Charity

A charity concert held for Child Reach International and Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital. The performers were well known singer-artist Raju Lama and Paper-edge band. Highlighting the work of Child reach International, the organization is working in different developing countries including Nepal to improve children's access to health, education and child rights.

‘It is a privilege to be an ambassador for Childreach Nepal who are doing valuable work with Nepal’s children. Thank you to all those who’ve supported Childreach International by attending one of my concerts in the UK,’ says Raju Lama, who performed at two well-received concerts in Ashford and Aldershot last week.

The 7th Annual Sarangi Day

The celebration of traditional and contemporary Nepali Folk Music Sarangi Day 2010 is sure to let you experience the real flavour of Nepali Folk Music. The 7th Annual Sarangi Day is back. This annual celebration of Nepali music, food and film will take place today- Friday; October 29.

An all-day celebration of Nepal’s Folk Music Heritage. Sarangi Day will feature Nepali folk-lore, especially from the Gandharba caste members who have gathered in Kathmandu from all over Nepal. Sham Nepali, a sarangi player who has been involved in almost all of the Sarangi Day festivals, said the main purpose of this day is to promote the traditional Nepali music.

”We should conserve it and also save and promote it because this can help Nepal recognized musically,” he said. And the Gandharba Cultural and Arts Organization is just doing that.
 

In addition,the festival will also have workshops and master classes and a documentary screening by the Mountain Music Project featuring musical collaborations between the Appalachian Bluegrass players from the US with the musicians of Gandharba caste. Referring to young groups like Saksham and the well known fusion band Kutumba, Nepal said,”The young generation of musicians is also incorporating folk tunes and sarangi in their music, thus preserving the folk tunes. The coming generation can further learn from them.”

The event starts from 2:00 pm onwards with free entrance.

The 12th Annual Tuborg Image Award was Held

The 12th Annual Tuborg Image Award was celebrated with fanfare at Army Officers Club on 2nd October. Hemant Rana was the main attraction of the function raking three awards including Best Song, Best Male Vocal (pop) and the Public Choice Award.

The event started with the thanking speech from President of Image Channel RK Manandhar. “The success of this award function is the success of the Nepali Music Industry. So instead of thinking of today as a day of winning or losing, consider this day as a victory for Nepali Music Industry.”

This year Life Time Achievement Award was presented to Poet Durga Lal Shrestha. Shrestha has not only been involved to poem and lyrics writing but also contributed to drama, patriotic songs and children’s books. According to a short clipping shown at the event on Shrestha explained through narration that he has written about beauty but he has never left the ugly side of any picture untouched which makes him a poet with different perspective.

The living legend was presented with the award as appreciation for his continued contribution to Nepali literature and music scene. To everyone’s delight artistes like Sabin Rai, Hemant Rana, Shiva Pariyar, Anju Pant, Prashant Tamang, Agantuk Kharel, Astha B and Mallika Karki  performed their hit numbers at the event.

Kutumba to Perform in Commonwealth Games in India

As we all know that Kutumba is on of the Nepali musical band which is contributing a lot in preserving and promoting Nepali Traditional Music.Kutumba has confirmed that they will be performing in the Commonwealth Games in India, October 10 and 11. One of the most celebrated folk instrumental ensembles of recent times, the group of six professionals from Kathmandu will be taking their sounds to a world audience and sharing the spotlight with some of the biggest names in Indian and international music scene.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in New Delhi, India, from October 3 to 14. The games will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in India. Prince Charles, who will represent Queen Elizabeth II at the opening ceremony, will formally announce the Commonwealth Games in Delhi to be open, jointly with the President of India, Pratibha Patil.

With a mission to preserve, present and promote traditional music, Kutumba wishes to spread Nepali folk music throughout the world. “It is such an honor to be able to represent the country. We couldn’t have asked for a better platform than this to take our music to a global audience,” said the man on percussion Pavit Maharjan. “It was a pleasant surprise when we got the call from the Indian Embassy. Initially, they had asked us to perform for16 days, but that would have been way too taxing. So we settled for two days,” he added.

Music Education in Nepal

Think of some Nepali musicians. Guys like Robin Tamang, Raju Gurung, Anil Shahi, and Pundit Homnath Upadhyaya. All are incredibly successful musicians from a range of different styles, and what they have in common is this country: Nepal. They come from Nepal, they have Nepali families, they make records and concerts in Nepal, and they are loved in Nepal.



They represent Nepal to the extent that any group of Nepali workers in Spain, Qatar, or Malaysia right now could be eating daal bhat and talking lightly about Pundit Homnath’s rock-steady classical tabla groove, or Anil Shahi’s lightning fast fusion guitar fingers, or Robin Tamang’s impassioned blues vocals. Nepali people can be proud of such musicians and their music
.
But now let’s take a closer look. Where did these musicians learn to play, write, and sing? Where does their music really come from? Nepal? No. Not a single one. Robin Tamang lived and played in Canada for years before launching his successful career in Kathmandu; Raju Gurung earned a degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA; Anil Shahi learned classical Eastern and Western guitar in India and the UK; and Pundit Homnath Upadhyaya learned tabla in Varanasi, India. Ask any one of them about music education in Nepal, and you’ll likely hear a sad story. Here’s part of that sad story, gathered from six months of interviews, observations, and classes in schools around Kathmandu.

The government doesn’t support music education to any practical extent, and music generally isn’t offered at government schools. Not surprisingly – the government is preoccupied with things like constitutions, federal states, and army staff at the moment, so it could be a while before they consider music with any seriousness. Some of the larger private higher secondary schools offer music teaching, depending on if the director or principal wants to or not, but the focus of this teaching seems to be with making adequate Parents’ Day shows—drilling the students by rote for weeks for a ten-minute performance of songs they already know. Principals and parents walk away satisfied, but what do the students actually learn? To sing songs that they already knew. Music? Hardly.

A music curriculum for Nepal is currently being processed by the Ministry of Education, but many principals have no idea about it, much less their overworked and underpaid music teachers, who often teach part-time at five or more different schools per week in order to make enough money to live. Lucky teachers will have a music classroom, some instruments, a reasonable amount of students, and electricity for part of the time – but only if they are lucky. Even if a teacher knows a music curriculum, he probably can’t teach it—there is no program in the country right now that focuses on music teaching skills, and many music teachers are trained as performers and teach only because it’s a job. They have nowhere to go to learn things like lesson planning, rehearsing, music notation, curriculum, classroom management, and performance organization; they have no resources like method books or syllabi; and they are under no accountability at all except to have their students pipe out 10 minutes of rote memorization once per year

Nepathya to Rock Kathmandu After Seoul

Good news for the Nepathya’s fans, after long time they are back to rock Kathmandu after Seoul. According to a nepalaya press statement, the band is ready for a concert in Kathmandu at the Academy Hall on September 28.

The concert in Seoul was a huge success, states the statement and even heavy rainfall did not stop Nepathya fans from reaching the Dong Guk University Auditorium to witness their band perform live in South Korea after five years on September 22. The show coincided to mark Korean thanksgiving holiday – Chuseok.

Along with evergreen numbers like Chekyo Chekyo, Euta Chitthi, Jomsome Bazaar, Resham, Lampate Surati, Yo Zindagani that enthralled the crowd. Nepathya also sang Siranma Photo, Salaijo, Palla Gharka and Jogale Huncha from their latest album, Aaina Jhyal. The band’s frontman Amrit Gurung, interacted with the audience and shared his travel stories,states the statements adding that time and again he requested all to live united and in harmony.

“Wherever we may be, we are Nepalese first, I request all Nepalese living here to stay united as Nepalese and not divided in numerous societies,” the statement qouted Amrit Gurung as requesting hinting towards the 63 societies Nepalese have in South Korea where the official Nepali population is under 10,000.

Shirshir Yogi’s Live Performance

Singer Shishir Yogi’s live performance truly mesmerized audiences who watched his show at the jam-packed Rastriya Nach Ghar, Jamal, Saturday. The solo musical program entitled “Samaya ka swar haru” was organized by Krantikari Yubak Sang.

In all, Yogi performed 15 songs from his albums “Pahichan”, “Suskera”, and the soon-to-be-released “Mod mod ma” during the two-hour-long program. Meanwhile, his six-year-old son Samyog took everyone by surprise with his song “Timro pani ragat”.

The “Sarangi ta rete pani” hit maker’s soothing voice was accompanied by the beats of the Harmony band. Besides crooning his hit numbers, Yogi also performed the song composed by Narayan Gopal “Ek muthi chamal pau hajura”, which has been recorded in his new album. Looking back nostalgically to Gopal, he said, though he couldn’t meet him personally, he would like to pay a tribute to the singer through the song.

Yogi is all set to release his third album – a collection of eight songs – by Dashain.

“The sentimental mood of the songs and the enthusiastic audience made a perfect combination,” said the singer as the show ended. The audience was enthralled by the performance and the hall was packed to the hilt.

The event was also graced by lyricists Ratna Shumsher Thapa and Padma Devkota. This was Yogi’s second solo concert to date.

Nepathya Come Up with Aaina Jhyal

Nepathya’s ninth album titled Aaina Jhyal was launched on september 14 at Nepalaya. Amrit Gurung, the band’s front man, who is a great lover of folk songs, has come up with the album that has folk influences in the majority of songs in the album. Most of the songs are written by Amrit Gurung himself.

The album was launched in the room where the band usually rehearses, jams up, composes and arranges their songs. Amrit Gurung dedicated the album to all his friends and people who helped him during the long journey of 20 years since the band was formed.

Kiran Shrestha, director of Nepalaya, hosted the programme. Seven songs of the album were audio previewed with photographs taken by the singer for the visuals.

The new album is related to his travels. The folks songs have touched different cultures, traditions and music of people whom he met during his journeys. Amrit said “I love travelling and it is important for those who compose folk songs. It teaches you about the lives of others. You experience and see the reality”. His music reflects his journeys. The singer, who has no musical figure as inspiration, learnt from listening to other people sing.

”I have no teacher as such. Simple people singing anywhere are the people from whom i have learnt and they are my inspiration,” said the singer.

Music for a Cause

Everest Band Nepal, which was established six months ago gave a musical concert at the Nepal Tourism Board, Bhrikutimandap on Tuesday to support youth scientist Rijan Karki who is set to attend the international conference of soils, sediments and water energy in the United States of America.
The band has five members in the frontline- Durga Prasad Khatiwada in basuri, Achyutram Bhandari in tabala, Dhurba Upreti in effects, Barta Gandharba in sarangi and Sibha Bhadur Sonam in saxophone.
During the concert the band performed mediation tunes, Nepali jazz, classical music, and folk tunes. The event was graced by Indra Prasad Dhungel, minister of state for science and technology, CPN-UML leader Bamdev Gautam and Ex-Army officer chief Rukmangad Katuwal.
Renowned German jazz saxophonist Rainer Pusch who was present at the event said, “ I enjoyed the performance thoroughly  and would love to colaborate with the artists.” The band will also be performing in Pokhara next month and is set to tour various nations in support of the Nepal Tourism Year 2011.

12th IMAGE AWARD IN SEPTEMBER

Image Channel, one of the most renowned media of Nepal is contributing a lot in promoting Nepali Music. In order to honour Nepali Artists, appreciate their work and inspire them to create better music,The 12th Annual Tuborg Image Award is all set to be held in early September.
In a press conference organized at Hotel Shangri-La in Lazimpat, Ram Krishna Manandhar, Chairman of Image Channel Private Limited, said, “we are pleased to be announcing the top five nominees in the 21 categories of the awards. Our priority has always been to promote the Nepali Music Industry and maintain transparency in the awards.”
He also mentioned that giving continuity to the addition of a new category in the awards every year, a new category Tuborg Image Public Choice Award has been added this year.
This award will be given solely based on the number of SMS votes sent in by listeners and audiences to the nominees. Among the 21 categories, four of them will be included in this award. These are: Best Vocal Performance Male, Best Vocal Performance Female, Best Vocal Performance Pop Male and Best Vocal Performance Pop Female.
Manandhar also announced the recipient of this year’s Image Life Time Achievement Award – Durga Lal Shrestha!
“Durga Lal Shrestha has been a towering figure in the Nepali Music Industry. His lyrical creations like “Phoolko Ankhama Phulai Sansara” sung by Ani Choying Dolma (and set to music by Nhyoo Bajracharya) have been hugely popular and he has been contributing to the industry since the days of the Rana rule.” said Manandhar.
Some popular nominees in this year’s awards include Hemanta Rana, Anju Panta, Dambar Nepali, Yadav Kharel and CIney Gurung, among others, in various categories.

Uglyz is Back

There is good news for the fans of the ‘The Uglyz’ as they are back with their second album  ‘The Transit’. Sarun Tamrakar, Sudip Tamrakar and Rakin Shrestha initiated their musical journey since 1996. They released their first album ‘Rush’ five years ago.
These days the band is busy in completing and releasing their second album. Lately, they have been performing in various places like Kathmandu, Pokhara. Vocalist Sarun Tamrakar recently informed that the album will be soon available in the market after the completion of two music videos.

Cultural Tour for Peace

A group of popular Nepalese Artists Yam Baral, Sunita Dulal, Nalina Chitrakar, Deepak Raj Giri, Deepa Sri Niraula and Gopal Adhikari in a ‘Cultural Tour for Peace’ are recently in America. They will be entertaining people out there through various performances related to their own field.
The series of performance includes singing, cultural dance, comedy-series etc. This program has been organized by ‘Nepal-US Press Club’ in collaboration with ‘Nepal Kala Manch’. In this very program, even the NRN Artists like Ratan Subedi, Sanjeev Pradhan, Ramesh Upreti, Sarisma Aamatya, Dinesh Bhandari and other will also be participating.

11:30 Basan Back As a Band

Good news for the fans of 11:30 Basan which is also the former vocalist of "The Shadows" Band, came back with his  solo debut album titled "Emerge" few years back. Now  he is back as a band which is self titled band and with their second album "Sunaudai Chhaun". Rebel Creation has taken responsibilities of production and marketing  of the album . Music video of "Ko Hun Ma" has been aired on various television channel. And the video has been directed by 11:30 Basan himself.
